David Orentlicher is a principled leader who knows that Indiana’s future depends on the strength of its schools, businesses, and communities.

David serves on the House Ways and Means Committee. In the past, he has served on the Education Committee, the Public Health Committee, and the Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business Committee.

A doctor, lawyer, and teacher, David Orentlicher is Samuel R. Rosen Professor and Co-Director of the Center for Law and Health at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. He also is an adjunct professor at Indiana University School of Medicine where he serves on the faculty of the Center for Bioethics.  He teaches courses in medical ethics and constitutional law, and he serves as an ethics consultant at Methodist, University and Wishard Hospitals.

David graduated from Harvard Medical School and then completed an internship in internal medicine. After practicing as a family physician, he returned to Harvard for law school.

David worked previously at the American Medical Association, directing its division of medical ethics.  While there, he drafted the AMA's first ever Patients' Bill of Rights.

A nationally recognized expert in medical ethics, David has published his research in leading medical and legal journals.  His co-authored textbook, Health Care Law and Ethics, is now in its 6th edition. Another book, Matters of Life and Death, was published by Princeton University Press.

David lives in Indianapolis with his wife Judy, also a professor at Indiana University, their son Cy, and daughter Shayna. He is a board member for his neighborhood association, the Highland-Kessler Civic League. David also serves on the board of the Gennesaret Free Clinic, a non-profit organization that provides medical and dental care to the homeless and other indigent people in the community, and the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

David, Judy, Cy and Shayna belong to Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, where David has taught in the Sunday School and served on the board of directors.
